You can earn “meme points” as well for additional discounts, and the way and number you earn is varied and seems a little random. If you want one click here if you would like to use my affiliate link and give me some sweet sweet points or dollars or something. On to the box!  (This is in no particular order, other than the order I photographed the items in)

Recipe by Nature Golden Time Vita Capsule Essence: Full Size $42

Vitamin Essence. This is another item that I’m going to have to go on a big ingredient list hunt for. There is an ebay listing that says it has

Panthenol (Vitamin B5)
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Vitamin C

But… what else?  That’s just the actives, right?  I like essences, but to try them out I think it’s good to know what else is in there.  I get worried about things like lemon, ect, that seem to show up from time to time in Korean skin care products.

DSC_0025

Shower Mate Perfume de Whip Body Wash:  Full size $4 each (2 total)

These are very scented.  The card says fruity and sweet floral refreshingly crisp white blossom (lighter tube) and elegant rose and jasmine scented Marilyn Red Fantasy (black tube.)  I say overwhelming perfume scent.  It’s a good scent, but I’ve been trying out indie perfumes lately, and these are just cloying in comparison.

DSC_0027

a;t fox Fantasy Holic Lip & Cheek Designer Pencil in Lovely Coral: Full Size $7

All over color, it’s pretty pigmented and a little shimmery. I tried this on my lips and it went on OK.  I don’t think I want bright coral colored cheeks, so I haven’t tried that yet.  It’s got enough shimmer to it that I probably won’t top it with a gloss.  I went out for dinner right after I put it on, and by the time I got to the restaurant it had rubbed off.

DSC_0028

Beauty People Miss 100 Super Waterproof Gel Liner in glimmer bronze: Full Size $38

Bronze eyeliner.  Not much more to say, than Yay it’s waterproof and I’m going to the beach this winter so I’m totally going to use it there! I am not normally one for golds and bronzes as eyeliners, but it’s good to branch out, right?  I’m going to give it a try, I think it will look great with black dresses and red lips.DSC_0031

VOV Good-Bye Black Smudge Waterproof Mascara:  Full Size $16

I like getting mascara samples.  I’m going to keep this one sealed up for now, since I already have 3 tubes going.  So no swatch.  I’m going to be bringing this with me on my Christmas beach holiday!  Whoo!

DSC_0034

Sua Young Mineral Essence in Liquid Foundation SPF33 PA+++:  Sample (5g) $5.65

The formula seems OK but the color is too light for me.  It’s creamy, and seems like it’s great for the right person’s skin though!  It’s also a really big sample for foundation.  I like it when samples are big enough that I can try things for a day or so before buying.

DSC_0037

Sally’s box 4 Set (Love Recipe Apple Mask, Delight Ceramide Hydrogel Mask, Delight Collagen Hydrogel mask, Delight Panthenol Hydrogel Mask:  Full Size $14
I love Sheet Masks. So much. And these are Hydrogel ones (aside from the apple one). I’m pretty pumped.  I’ve been wanting more good sheet masks ever since the Leaders Insolution ones I got in another Memebox.  They are hard to come by in Canada (The Face Shop has some disappointing ones, but otherwise it’s big shipping costs to get them here.)

DSC_0040

Kocostar 4 Package Set:  Ggongii Hair Pack, 10 Face Spot Mirror Patch, 5 finger nail pack, 3 Foot Peeling Pack:  $20 Total Value

I’m totally excited to see my feel peel up like crazy. This is going to be so gross and awesome.  I like packs, masks and other things like this, so i’m glad there were so many in this box.  I’m very curious about how this finger nail pack works out, you are supposed to put them on and let them sit for about an hour.  The hair one says you don’t wash it out, but it should also involve a ponytail…. my chin length hair can only get into slightly questionable looking pigtails, so hopefully that will work.  Then the foot pack… it says to only leave it on for an hour!  Then I will molt after 3-5 days.

Beauty People Miss 100 Super Waterproof Gel Liner in glimmer bronze

Sua Young Mineral Essence in Liquid Foundation SPF33 PA+++

Total Value:  $150

This box is pretty awesome!  I think there is more in here that I will use than I’ve had in most other boxes, even though it seems like it has less big ticket items.   Quality over quantity, right?  I think I’m going to get good use most everything.

(Under $30) Cheapskate Approved because it’s so high value!

  Pretty Great!

Edit:  I don’t know why some things are links, but for whatever reason I can’t remove the links (wordpress conspiracy?)

Illi Green Tea Brightening Mask: $3 DSC_0013

A Sheet Mask.  I like sheet masks and I’ve had good luck with green tea ones.

Botanic Hill Boh Radiant Youth Ampule Essence & Boh Moist Youth Ampoule Essence: $3.20 and $4

DSC_0015

They are supposed to provide youth.  An ampule and an essence that are supposed to be used together.

Hanskin Bio Origin Royale Ampule BB Spf 30 PA++: $8.40

DSC_0017

DSC_0019 DSC_0021

This is kind of a neat way to package BB cream.  It’s a pretty good color for me as you can see from the swatch, I’ll try it out on my face.  PA++ though.  Not great considering the ++++ of many of the new ones coming out.

Charm Mud Green Pearl:  Full Size $70

DSC_0024 DSC_0027

This stuff smells BAD.  Really bad.  Like that sewagy mud scent I remember from the mud on the side of the road.  It apparently comes from ancient bedrocks and is very rich in minerals.  I don’t know why exactly, but there is a wormwood powder package that is supposed to be added.  Very strange.

Since this is a product I want to try, I asked for help from reddit to get a translation on the ingredients.  This is what a very kind stranger provided as a translation:

씨실트, 정제수, 개산초열매추출물, 할미꽃추출물, 어스니어추출물, 일라이트

Sea Silt, Water, Zanthoxylum Alatum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Usnea Barbata (Beard Moss) Extract, Illite

Not a bad ingredients list.

I plugged the ingredients into COSDNA, which is an amazing website made to analyze ingredient safety and how likely it is to cause acne.  It got pretty good marks, nothing that’s clearly an irritant or pore clogger in most.  I’ll give it a try and see how it goes.

Mise en Scene Curling Essence: $12

DSC_0029

Meh.  I get a lot of this kind of thing, and they are all pretty similar.  De-frizzer with a bit of hold.  Not bad.

Illi Cleansing Oil and Foam Set: $1.65 each (15ml)

DSC_0032

Oil and foam cleansing!  This is pretty much the only part of the korean skincare routine I haven’t tried, mostly because I can’t justify buying overpriced mixed up oils when my argon, jojoba, baby oil and avocado oil that I use for oil cleansing, followed by Spectro Gel.  Cheap and effective.  But maybe I’ll be a convert after this.

Elle Girl I Say Tint You Say Gloss: $23

DSC_0037   DSC_0040

Lip gloss!  It’s bright and I like it.  Not too sticky, goes on smooth.

23 Years Old Air-laynic Pore Masc: $14

DSC_0035

This looks like a yeast infection treatment kit but it is actually kind of an assemble it yourself sheet mask.  I guess it’s supposed to make me look like I’m 23 years old?  It’s pricy!  But looks kind of neat.

Total Value:  $140.90

I wouldn’t pay anything close to $70 for a stinky clay mask, but I guess if they are saying that’s the retail value I can believe it.  Glamglow is more per ml.

This box is OK.  It’s the first that didn’t include a full size sun screen, which I’ve come to rely on.  I’ve been spoiled.  I’ll use a lot of the products, but I think I may be holding off ordering more Memeboxes, I’m tiring of getting so many tiny essences and hair smoothening creams.

(Under $30) Cheapskate Approved because it’s so high value!

Just OK, probably will use some, but not all.

IPSY June 2014

Image

What’s an IPSY: IPSY sends out a package of surprises in the GLAM BAG (well, they spoil the surprise right before they ship, but when you but you don’t know what you are getting so it starts as a surprise.)

COST:  $10 a month (it’s $10 + $4.95 shipping)  Use my referral link to join if you want to share the love!

DELIVERY:  Ships Mid Month (Canada is a bit behind the US shipping from what I saw online)

WAITLIST:  Yes.  But if you refer someone they will move you off it.

This month was…. probably great for someone who is not me.  I didn’t like it at all, and I’ve overcompensated by taking some nicer pictures of it than I usually do.  Gotta get excited about something, right?

Nicka K New York Shimmer Eyeliner:  $4.99

I’m sure there is someone that this looks great on.  IImage unfortunately do not think that person is over 25.  As a 31 year old, I will never use this.

NYX Butter Gloss: $5

This I actually do like  It is buttery, and the color is good for me.Image

OFRA Universal Eyebrow Pencil: $13

Good value, though when I swatched it I was unimpressed as it caked a bit.  I don’t do my brows on a regular basis, so I haven’t tried it on my face yet.  I’ll try it and we will see, maybe it will convert me.  The color is right for me at least!
Image

Image

Carol’s Daughter Sacred Tiare Anti-Breakage & Anti-Frizz Styling Cream:  The full size is $12, the sample is tiny and I will probably use it twice before it’s empty.  I actually would have been pretty happy if they sent the surf spray, but I have probably 6 or 7 different kinds of anti frizz stuff, I really don’t need any more.

Realtree for her:  $0 because no sane person would ever pay for a perfume sample.

This smells like a combination of bar bathroom and air freshener.

It reminds me of the body sprays people used to use to cover up the cigarette smell so their parents wouldn’t notice.Image

The Bag:  I actually like this bag.  It’s cute, seems to be good quality, and is a good size.

I’m about 1 more bag away from unsubscribing from ipsy.  I’m just not getting value or products I like or want to try.  But for now:

(Under $20)

I will use the products that I like, but I don’t expect to buy any, and the value to cost just isn’t there this month.

Seeking the Fountain of Youth: Adventures in Tretinoin Week 4 of Tretinoin, and Getting Past the Purge

Ughhhhhh.  I can’t wait for this part to be over.

IMG_2804 IMG_2905

My prescription is dated May 15, which means I’ve been using the tretinoin for a full month now, about 4.5 weeks.

What is purging:

Purging is something that might happen (not to everyone, not every time, but apparently I’m just that lucky) if you are using products with active exfoliants, such as AHAs, BHAs, and yes, retinoids. It’s essentially because the increased exfoliation causes your skin to push the blockages inside of it out to the surface.

What does purging look like:

Acne. It looks like skin getting worse before it gets better.  Sometimes for weeks.  In fact, it can take up to 12 weeks for things to actually turn around.  Skinacea has a big pile of information on purging.  It’s worth a read.

My experience:

I’m still peeling a bit, especially the morning after those nights that I get lazy about the wait time between cleansing and application (the recommended wait time is at least 15 mins, longer if you can, since water seems to increase irritation and peeling.)  My forehead is, of course, purging and covered in red bumps.  That’s my worst trouble zone, and always where I break out if I’m going to.  This time I’m also getting breakouts down the left side of my face, along my temples and toward my cheeks.  I love foundation these days.  The pictures above are me, no makeup, no photoshop, no cover.

I’m not on tretinoin to reduce acne, and it looks like so far I don’t have any decrease in my fine lines.  It’s supposed to take up to a year before that happens, but I’m hoping I will see SOMETHING before then.

Patience, patience, patience.  This is the hard part.

Hydration:

This is becoming something I think about a lot.  I’m having to alter my products a little, and add a few more hydrating products.

I’m still using CeraVe  as my final moisturizing step.  It stings.  But it seems to keep my skin quite well hydrated, and absorbs really quickly.  A coating of Vaseline over my chin and around my mouth (where the peeling shows up) seems to really help as well.

I’m in the market now for a new hyaluronic acid product.  My Garden of Wisdom ones are almost out, and I didn’t see enough of a difference while using them to re-order.  I’m eyeing up the Hada Labo one I keep seeing good reviews of.  For now I’m using these My Beauty Diary Caviar Masks I got atT&T Market.  I was a bit worried about the scent but they don’t irritate and leave my skin smooth and soft.  Caviar also just sounds so luxurious, I couldn’t resist.  These masks do contain hyaluronic acid and feel really hydrating and nice.  I also feel like I’m spoiling myself when I use them. They all seem to have pretty similar ingredients, here is a list of the MBD items that have been run through COSDNA.  I really like COSDNA, it checks for possible irritants and acne triggers, and lists each of the ingredients and what their usual purpose is in skin care products.  It’s a good way to get past the unknowns on a product list, and avoid things you know your skin can’t take.  MBD isn’t by any means a perfect product (the fragrance could irritate some people,) but it works for a lot of people and seems to have a pretty solid list of ingredients.

MEMEBOX #21 Dermo-Cosmetics

What’s a Memebox?

Memebox is a Korean beauty box service that ships from Korea to Canada and the US (and quite a few other countries). In each Memebox, you get 6-8 Korean beauty products, some are deluxe samples and some are full sizes.  The normal box is $23 + shipping (and not shipping per box but per order, so if you order multiples it’s a way better deal.  Superboxes, like the one reviewed here, are between $29 and $39  This particular one was $39, I bought it during a $10 off sale.

You can earn “meme points” as well for additional discounts, and the way and number you earn is varied and seems a little random.  If you want one click here if you would like to use my affiliate link.  You get 10 memepoints just for signing up right now, which is a really good value!

On to the box!

Memebox  21 Dermo Cosmetics

I bought this box because I thought it would likely contain non-irritating, effective products.  I had hoped for free of scents, and free of irritants.

The Goods

  1. Dr Oracle Real White Eye Gel
  2. Dr Oracle Easy Care Shiny Water Pack
  3. Kangskin Beauty Multi Block Sun Cream
  4. Kangskin Beauty Scalp Treatment Shampoo
  5. Dewy Tree 7 Cut Facial Cream
  6. Kangskin Beauty Aqua Soothing Mask
    IMG_2963IMG_2968

Dewy Tree 7 Cut Facial Cream $40 Value:

INGREDIENTS:  Water, chamaecyparis obtusa water, hydrogenated polydecine, glycerin, cetearyl alcohol, dipropylene glycol, shea butter, cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane, triethyhexanion, macadamia temifolica seed oil, polyglyceryl-3 methylglucose disterate, sorbitan stearate, grapefruit extract, isopropyl palmitate, caulerpa len tillfera extract, ecklonia cava extract, cladosiphon okamuranus extract, ceramide 3, althea rosea root extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, sciadopitys verticillata root extract, polygonum multiforum root extract, eleuthro root extract, portulaca oleracea extract, panax ginsing root extract, asparagus cochinchinesis root extract, betaine, trehalose, cetearyl olivate, sorbitan olivate, glyceryl sterate SE, hydrogenated lecithin, sodium hydraulate, dextrain, citrus fruit oil, basil oil, lavander oil, thuja occidentalis leaf extract, cedrus altantica bark oil, chamomilla recuitita flower extract, cictus ladaniferus resin, pelargonium graveolens flower oil, citrus medica limonum peel oil citrus aurantium dulcis peel oil, pogo stemon calin oil, thyme flower/leaf extract, arginine trisodium EDTA, xanthin gum, carbomer, 1, 2,-Hexanediol, phedoxyethanol.

That’s a LOT of versions of citrus products.  Too many.  COSDNA mainly returned a lot of fragrance and potential acne and irritation triggers.

A product page I found said:  “7 Additive effects of toxic elements are maximized by minimizing the daily cream. Miracle of the forest and the sea blue algae Phytoncide sap effective ingredients helps to improve nervous and tired skin.”

This is probably something I’ll try on my body.

DSC_0036

Kangskin Beauty Scalp Treatment Shampoo ($18):

INGREDIENTS:  It actually says “Main ingredients” on the box, so I guess that isn’t the whole list:  Biotin, collagen, tripeptide, cooper peptide, herb complex, ECT.

Shampoo?  OK, not what I expected.  This stuff smells… bad.  Like medicinal bad.  But my hair seems to like it OK. The product explanation card says that this shampoo is infused with stem cell activating ingredients to treat damaged scalp tissue and damaged hair ends for healthy hair growth.  It’s in a very small container, but you don’t need much, so I guess it will last a while.  I’ll try it for a few weeks and see if my hair magically looks better.  I won’t be holding my breath.

DSC_0040

Dr Oracle Easy Care Shiny Water Pack ($25)

INGREDIENTS: This is another one I can’t find anywhere online.  The product card says it contains grape seed oil, jojoba oil, macadamia seed oil, olive oil, sunflower seed oil, avocado oil and annatto oils.  The box itself has “No added agreeable: parabens, phenoxyethyl, benzophenone, surfactants, animal oil, GMO, imidazolidinyl urea, artifical colors, talc.”  Below that there is a section that says “Fermented Caragana Root Extract” which I guess means it’s got that ingredient.

I have loved every product that I have tried with the words “water pack” in them.  If there is one thing Korean skin care products have consistently been “wins” for me, it’s subtle watery moisture.  I’ve so far only tried this on my hand, but it’s got a watery consistency.

The instructions card says you can either massage it in for 10 seconds, and rinse it off, of layer it under makeup for a dewy look.  Once I’m done patch testing, I’m going to try the latter.  My dehydrated skin always looks much better when it’s made to look “dewy.”

DSC_0042

Kangskin Beauty Multi Block Sun Cream ($42)

I’m always thrilled to get sun screen in my beauty boxes.  It’s expensive, and another thing I’ve had really really good luck with from Korean brands.

INGREDIENTS: Arbutin, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Isomany p-MC, Ceramide

Good list!  I love physical sunscreens, I don’t care about white cast since I wear makeup anyway.  I’m looking forward to using this.

DSC_0043

Dr Oracle Real White Eye Gel $30

INGREDIENTS: Not listed, and another I can’t find online.  The box says it doesn’t have any mineral oil, triethanolamine, sulfate surfactant, talc, artificial colorants.  It contains 8 white flower extracts.

I like this kind of eye cream, and the consistency is liquidy and nice.  I’m still using the Dr Jart from a previous Memebox, so this will go into the “to try later” pile.

DSC_0050

Kangskin Beauty Aqua Soothing Mask $10

More stem cell activating ingredients!

I love sheet masks, so I’ll try this one soon.

I’m overall pretty happy with this box.  I love trying new products, and the sunscreen, shiny water pack and eye cream alone make this box well worth the cost.  I’m excited to order more from memebox since their boxes seem to be really really good value and have great products (because high value products I don’t like aren’t going to be worth much to me.)

The total value of this box is $165 in products.  I’d remove the Dewy Tree 7 Cut from the “value to me” price, making it still a $125 box.

(Under $30) Cheapskate Approved because it’s so high value!

Will use most products, very happy with the box all in all. Good Buy!

Seeking the Fountain of Youth: Adventures in Tretinoin (Stieva-A) Week 1, Tretinoin and the Changes to My Routine

DSC_0012

Before: AM Routine

I’m a Paula’s Choice Junkie, so you may notice a trend.  I like deals, but even better than deals I like products that actually do what the label promises.  Paula’s Choice consistently delivers.

5AM: Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Lotion + Sunscreen

Then I head to the gym to work out, post gym I shower there and get ready for work

7AM

Spectro Gel Cleanser (Just a gentle cleanser, it was recommended by my derm when I was a teenager and it’s worked for me for years now.  It’s cheap, gentle, and awesome)

Super Serum by Silk Naturals which I’ve been phasing out (it’s almost empty) and replacing with Paula’s Choice RESIST Pure Radiance Skin Brightening Treatment – both of these have Niacinamide, I don’t really think they are equal products, and I’m not sure exactly what I’ll do once I’m out of the Paula’s Choice.  I may try something else entirely.

Snail Bee High Content Essence is awesome.  I love it.  I’ll probably write about it soon.   I never thought I’d put literal snail slime on my face, but I’m a convert.  More raving about it to follow.

Dr Jart V7 Eye Serum I actually got this in a Memebox, it was a spoiler and pretty much the reason that I ordered the box.  I like it a lot, even though a lot that I’ve read says don’t bother with eye cream.  This one is light and gentle, and doesn’t run into my eyes.

CeraVE AM sunscreen.  I know I need to add an actual sunscreen + moisturizer as separate steps, but I really like CeraVE AM.  More Niacinamide, moisture, and a decent SPF.  I put a ton on and just let it sink in while I do my hair, so i know I’m getting the requisite 1/4 teaspoon on my face.  Actually I think I put about double that, these days.

Makeup is various things.  I bought both the BB cream and the Paula’s Choice foundation in the wrong color, but mixing them together seems to make the color right.  Next time I’m just going to Sephora to get a proper color match and some good foundation to try.

DSC_0001

Before: PM Routine

OCM:  I’m an OCM junkie, I started with just unscented baby oil, but then I went on a Garden of Wisdom buying spree to the tune of $200 or so, and got a ton of oils to try.  Right now I’m using Argon, Avocado, Almond, Jojoba and baby oil all mixed together.

Spectro Gel to double cleanse

The sometimes treatments section of masks, and AHA.  I love this Weekly Resurfacing Treatment AHA by (who else?) Paul’s Choice.  I can’t wait to bring it back into rotation once my skin is used to the tretinoin.  I fit in My Beauty Diary sheets masks a few days a week.  Right now I’m on Snail and Caviar.  They just sell these at the T&T Market by my house, they are more than online but it’s very convenient.  I also like this Skin Food Black Sugar Scrub.  I don’t use physical exfoliants often, but I do like it throw it every once in a while.

Resist C 15 Super Serum by Paula’s Choice.  This one is expensive as far as C Serums go, and it seems to do the same thing as the Silk Naturals one.  I love C Serum though, so I will always use one from some brand or other.

Garden of Wisdom Hydraulic Acid serum.  This one is blueberry, the one I tried before was Grapefruit, and next I may try Honey.

CeraVE in the tub works well as a moisturizer for me, it’s thick and creamy and great.

Laniege Water Sleeping Pack to top it all off.  This is pretty scented, but it works well for me.

This is my current routine.  I won’t go into all the products again, especially since the only new addition is the trentinoin at night.  I’ve removed all my chemical exfoliants, which i can not wait to add back in once my skin adjusts in a couple of months.

Current PM Routine

Seeing this all laid out like this I feel like such a product junkie.

Anyway, what do you think?  What did you change in your routine when you started something more extreme?

Beauty Box 5: May 2014

What’s BeautyBox5: BeautyBox5 is a beauty sampling subscription service.  Each box is a surprise, and supposed to contain more value than the cost of the box.  At the time I ordered this box, there was a “firstboxfree” promo, so I didn’t pay for this one.

COST: $12 a month. Use my referral link to join if you want to share the love!

DELIVERY: Ships Mid Month (Canada was a bit behind the US shipping from what I saw online)

WAITLIST: Not at this time.

THE GOODIES:

Image

MaskerAide Sheet Mast:  Value $6 – For one mask?  Yes, for one mask.  That’s a pricy one.  I like sheet masks and I use various ones from Asian Skincare lines (My Beauty Diary in Caviar and Snail are currently on rotation in my routine.)  I look forward to using this!  As I mentioned in the past posting, I’m not putting anything new on my face right now since I’m still peeling after my Retin A incident.

Cattiva Retractable Waterproof Eye Liner – Value $20, this one is a full size item.  I love black eyeliner, it’s pretty much the only color I wear, so this is a perfect match for my.  Retractable, goes on velvety smooth, I’m a fan.

ImageImage

Ban Total Refresh Cooling Body Cloths: Value $1, for the three of them.  These are going to be super handy for camping this summer.  I’ll be saving them until then.

Image

Image H20+ Aqualibrium Marine Cleansing Gel (8 ml): Value $1.20, the full size is 4oz for $18.  I love my facewash, so I don’t think I’ll try this one.  Facewash is one of the things that I don’t like to experiment with.

Image

Harvey Prince Hello Perfume  (2 ml): Value $2, full size is 50ml for $55.  Can I be honest here?  Yes, this is my blog, I can be honest here. I do not like this at all.  It smells cheap, like it wants to be Clinique Happy but failed.

Overall, this bag was free and I can’t really complain about that.  Will I join the BB5 subscription?  I’m signed up, so I’ll see what they send my in June.  I think this free bag was a way to clear the warehouse of old junk, based on what I’ve seen online, and I’m happy to give them a chance.  But if this box turns out to be indicative of what they normally send I won’t keep the subscription.

(Under $20)

I will use the products, but the only one I’m happy about is the eyeliner.
